Three of the Rudd Government's Education Revolution programmes would be discontinued under plans announced by the Federal Opposition.
The cuts are part of a $ 46 billion in 'savings' targeted by the Opposition in its response to the 2010 Budget, and in preparation for the election. The Shadow treasurer's speech, and the list of savings, can be accessed here.
If the Coalition comes to Government the following programmes would be discontinued:
- Digital Education Revolution (Computers in Schools)
- Smarter School, Improving Teacher Quality Program
- Trade Training Centres Program
The Opposition statement says the effect of these cuts would be "offset by lower cost and more efficient Coalition programmes".
On the capital side of Government spending, the Coalition has previously foreshadowed a "restructure" to the BER programme, with "further funding going to school communities, not bureacracies" (Tony Abbott, budget speech-in-reply, May 13, 2010). The full effect of this on non-government schools has not yet been made clear.
We will be discussing the effects of these announcements with the Opposition, and are keen to have the feedback of members.
