A new checklist for non-profit organisations has recently been published on the ATO website.  Non-profit organisations from across the sector were invited to participate in the co-design of the checklist intended to support non-profit organisations’ governance approach to tax and superannuation affairs.

The Self-governance checklist for non-profit organisations helps non-profit organisations to review their status as non-profit organisations and also their continued entitlement to tax concessions, while assisting them to meet their tax and super obligations.

The checklist has the added benefit of assisting non-profit organisations with managing performance and reputation risks as it can help the organisation to maintain high standards of compliance. With the aid of the checklist, a more robust governance and tax risk management framework can be put in place whereby non-profit organisations can identify, assess and avoid material tax and super risks.  The completed checklist can be provided to a board, committee or trustee, to ensure that they are better informed about the tax and super risks of the organisation.

The ATO is confident that the governance focus of the checklist will also enhance voluntary compliance and contribute to community confidence that tax concessions within the non-profit sector are being used as intended for the benefit of the community.

For more information about the self-governance checklist, refer to the Self-governance checklist for non-profit organisations (NAT 73955).
