Employment Relations Changes from 1 July 2017

As the new financial year commences, there are some important changes occurring in the employment area from 1 July.

Minimum Wage

The National Minimum Wage (full-time rate) for award/agreement-free employees increases from $672.70 pw to $694.90 pw. This also impacts the amounts payable under the Government's Paid Parental Leave Scheme.

Modern Award Minimum Wages

In line with the increases in the National Minimum Wage the Modern Awards minimum wages are also increased by 3.3%, much higher than the 2.4% increase last year. Copies of the modern awards covering Christian schools without an employment agreement are attached below, the:

  • Educational Services (Schools) General Staff Award 2010 [MA000076],
  • Educational Services (Teachers) Award 2010 [MA000077].

High Income Threshold

The High Income Threshold, above which Modern Awards have no coverage and the unfair dismissal provisions of the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth) do not apply, has increased from $138,900 pa to $142,000 pa.


While the superannuation guarantee charge percentage remains 9.5% of ordinary time earnings as increases have been delayed till 2021, the maximum contribution base has increased to $52,760 per quarter. This equates to an annual salary rate of $211.040.
