A Woman’s Place

Women today inhabit and excel in every profession, yet many Christian women wonder about the value of work outside the home. And in circles where the traditional family model is highly regarded, many working women who sense a call to work find little church or peer support.

About Katelyn

Katelyn is a Midwest native, an oldest child, and an INFJ / Enneagram 3w4. But the most important thing you should know is that she loves words and believes they can change the world.

She first learned this as an undergrad at Calvin College, where she edited the student newspaper and genuinely looked forward to writing papers. After studying theology at Oxford University, she landed her first job at Christianity Today magazine in the suburbs of Chicago. She would go on to launch a women’s website (Her.meneutics) and become the magazine’s youngest and first female managing editor.

Lest you think it’s all been upward and onward, at age 27 she went through a major life event that shook her identity. So naturally, she decided to write a book about work, vocation, and identity, which came out in 2016 from Simon & Schuster. She speaks regularly on work and vocation, writing, culture, and politics.

She has written for The New Yorker, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and The New York Times on light topics such as politics, gender, and theology, and have commented on faith and culture for CNN, ABC, NPR, Associated Press, Religion News Service, and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

When she’s not doing all the things with the words, she enjoys spending time exploring Brooklyn, reading, karaoke, tweeting snarky observations, international travel, and acquiring books for Brazos Press.

What is FLAME?

The FLAME Network is a long-awaited national initiative of CSA designed to champion Female Leaders And Managers in Education. Together, we aim to celebrate women in leadership and to inspire, encourage and support aspiring and emerging leaders in Christian education. The Flame network will enable strong connections between experienced and inexperienced leaders and help identify and encourage structures that support women in leadership.

“Flame is more than networking and building relationships, it’s about developing capacity of female leaders and aspiring female leaders to lead with confidence and humility to be all that God has created them to be.”
– Jill Healey, National Flame Network Facilitator, Christian Schools Australia.
