Having trouble selecting relevant and appropriate goals for your IEPs?

Anna Noble (Lecturer: Special Education – Learning Disabilities and Inclusive Education, Flinders University) presents:

IEP Frameworks for Making Decisions and Providing Supports: What’s useful?

It is common for ‘special and inclusive educators’ to experience multiple concerns about the construction and effectiveness of IEPs at both the classroom and individual level. Understandably special education teachers want to address their immediate student and school concerns, however in many cases these teachers find such changes are not sufficient to yield both appropriate and sustainable solutions to the complex problem of useful IEPs. Recent research on appropriate and sustainable practices, documents the need for special educators to adopt strength-based IEP writing practices and to develop IEP frameworks that promote flexible and contextualized IEPs. This session aims to discuss this research, provide opportunities for participants to evaluate the suggested IEP practices for their site, and identify potential opportunities for improving their IEP processes at their sites. The session will be intentionally interactive, with opportunities for participants to 1) establish a shared language about IEP; 2) gain a shared understandings about the use and usefulness of IEPs across sites; 3) examine and discuss IEP exemplars brought by the presenter and 4) begin a collaboration around a flexible  IEP framework to generate  better access to the general education curriculum for students with disabilities and those with other high support needs.

Participants are encouraged to bring a current deidentified IEP/ILP to the session.

Please note:

SpecNet will be held in the Collaborative Learning Area (Building 18 on map), and participants will need to sign in at the Middle School (building 16 on map).
