Government Responds to Concerns Regarding Greens Bill

As indicated in our earlier briefing on the Green’s Private Members’ Bill introduced recently, CSA wrote to the Attorney-General and Shadow Attorney-General to raise our concerns. The Green’s Equal Opportunity (LGBTIQ Anti-Discrimination) Amendment Bill 2018 (WA) would effectively eliminate the protections for Christian schools in Western Australia.

The Opposition responded recently, see here, and we have now received a response from the office of the Attorney-General, Hon. John Robert Quigley MLA.  The response indicates that the Government ‘has not yet decided whether or not to support the bill, and it is currently under consideration‘ although it goes on to acknowledge ‘that the bill raises sensitive issues and that there are a range of views in the community‘.

The lack of clear support for religious freedoms from both the Opposition and now the Government is of great concern.  We will continue to work with the Government and Opposition, to seek support for appropriate, robust, protections for religious freedom at a State level regardless of developments at a Commonwealth level.
