We are regularly asked how long schools are required or simply expected to keep records. Our response usually refers to the Records Retention & Disposal Schedule for Non-Government Schools prepared by the Australian Society of Archivists as reflecting the ‘best practice’ in this area.
A new Records Retention & Disposal Schedule for Non-Government Schools, 2nd Edition (RRDS) has recently been release and is now available for purchase. It is structured and numbered in a hierarchical way, under high-level functions typical of all schools with recommended minimum retention periods. Editable columns are included to allow flexibility in customising the content to suit each school’s context. Common school activity and function related records are covered by the new schedule along with recommended minimum retention periods for temporary records and recommendations for those that are required for permanent retention.
