As outlined in our briefing last year, in one of its last acts before adjourning for the year the Senate referred the Opposition’s Sex Discrimination Amendment (Removing Discrimination Against Students) Bill 2018 and all associated amendments to a Senate Committee for review.
The Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee is undertaking this Inquiry and CSA has lodged a joint submission with Adventist Schools Australia to the Committee. A copy can be downloaded from the link below.
In the submission we outline the context of Christian schools and the importance of religious freedom. Consistent with international law we argue that the current exemptions should only be removed if other, more appropriately tailored, protections for religious freedoms replace them.
We also reiterate that Christian schools have no desire to expel students simply on the grounds of sexuality orientation or gender identity, the purported rationale for the amendments to the Sex Discrimination Act.
